![]() ![]() Some used the money to buy property in other parts of California so they could continue to farm. The events leading up to passage of the Point Reyes Wilderness Act begin in 1962, when Congress authorized creation of the Point Reyes National Seashore and appropriated funds for land acquisition within the Seashore's designated boundaries. As a result, ranch owners received hundreds of millions of dollars. We need to continue to make a positive environmental impact to help sustain family farms, protect wildlife habitats and biodiversity, and improve local rural economies while offering access to local nutritious food. In 1962 when Point Reyes National Seashore was established, the federal government purchased the ranches found on the peninsula at fair market value. Climate change, pandemics, wildfires, droughts, and other disasters are threatening all of us. Prioritizing a local, carbon-neutral organic dairy farming and food production system that is good for the planet and our communities is now more crucial than ever. Organic dairy farming has provided a more stable pricing model, stabilizing the market for dairy farmers in the region. These dairies contribute more than 22% of Marin County’s organic milk production. The Seashore was formally established at Drake’s. It authorized the acquisition of 64,000 acres, to which the State of California added 11,416 acres of tidelands and the County of Marin deeded Drake’s Beach and McClure Beach. ![]() Today, five dairies in the Park are certified organic out of the 16 organic dairies in Marin County. Kennedy signed the legislation to create the Point Reyes National Seashore on September 13, 1962. ![]() These ranches and dairies play a critical role in maintaining the stability of our agricultural and rural communities by providing high quality food, livelihood, and support for the region.
